Fortification Of Beverages And Its Health Benefits


Food fortification has been gaining momentum in recent years; it helps maintain the quality of foods, and keeps nutrient levels adequate to correct or prevent specific nutritional deficiencies especially in the elderly, vegetarians, malnourished and pregnant women. Micronutrient-fortified foods including beverages, which encompass a wide range of products such as fruit juices and drinks, milk and milk drinks, chocolate (malt) beverages, instant flavored drinks, nectars, meal replacers, supplements for pregnancy and lactation, and sports drinks, are becoming increasingly popular in many countries. The purpose of this article is to review the elements involved in beverage fortification, and their constraints and benefits.
